Next up in the Stephen Pelton Dance Theater 2009 season, on May 10 & 17, is the installation of and a white light in the back of my mind to guide me. The installation, choreographed for 8 performers and performed in the beautiful Patricia Sweetow Gallery, is composed of twelve variations on the original 10-minute work from 2008. Set to a score by Gavin Bryars, the dance was inspired by the poem "Prayer Before Birth," by the poet Louis MacNeice. The complete work, which will run on a continuous loop from 4-6 pm, consists of twelve quietly different versions of a single meditation on how one might reconcile one's self, not only with mankind's darkest impulses, but to the inescapable progress of time and the body as well.
The gallery is located at 77 Geary Street on the mezzanine level. The audience is invited to enter at any time during the performance and to leave when they choose. No reservations are necessary. The installation is a free event and each performance will be followed by a brief reception with the performers.
